Preparation check list

Preparation is essential: As this is a device you will use every day, there is a lot involved. Even with a direct sync to the current phone/tablet, the device lock (PIN, password or pattern plus fingerprint) must be added, and apps on the new device will need to be signed into (with Keychain autofill makes this easier if set up). Any mobile banking app will have strong security so this has several steps to set up once the new phone is ready and the SIM is activated.

Have new SIM or move existing SIM: If the old SIM fits the new iPhone it just needs to be moved to it. If not, a new SIM must be activated on the iPhone via the mobile network provider’s website. Access the mobile network provider’s website to see instructions. e.g. search ‘how do I set up a new SIM in Vodafone’ to learn about activating a new or upgraded SIM. (The old iPhone can be used until it does not make calls, at that point the new SIM will have been activated and this takes up to 24 hours)

Check Apple ID and app account info: The Tomtie Toolkit should have relevant account details: Apple ID, Email account (for contacts and calendar), Bank account and other signed in accounts such as Google or Microsoft, Norton account and WiFi password

Check current iPhone/iPad is backed up: See sync and backup section

Charge both iPhones/iPads: Make sure there is over 80% charge in each otherwise connect each to a charger

Decide on a name for the new iPhone/iPad and the passcode to unlock it: Write this down on the ‘My iPhone’ or ‘My iPad’ page in the Tomtie Toolkit

Unpack the iPhone/iPad: Open the box for the iPhone/iPad and read through any support material

Check broadband speed with speedtest.net: Slow download speeds will mean extra time if the new device is being synced from a cloud backup
